Microsoft and Toshiba team up on next-gen IoT solutions

At this week’s Computex Taipei, Asia’s enormous IT trade show, Toshiba and Microsoft announced plans to collaborate to build next-generation Windows- and Azure-powered Internet of Things (IoT) enterprise solutions.

“Bringing together the power of the Azure Services and IoT Suite with Toshiba’s cutting edge sensor-driven devices will provide a new level of data access and business intelligence to customers,” said Nick Parker, Microsoft’s Corporate Vice President, OEM Division.

The first planned offering is a complete solution for the transportation and logistics industry, due later in 2015. The solution will span everything from advanced analytics using Azure Machine Learning to devices such as an onboard video recorder that tracks vehicle data, and a battery capable of six months’ continuous operation that will run on the Azure infrastructure to track shipping.

The transportation industry stands to make enormous gains using IoT technologies for everything from fleet management to predictive maintenance and beyond; we’ve already seen some pretty exciting large-scale pilots by our partners.
